If you’re experiencing a toothache, rinse your mouth with warm water and gently floss to ensure no debris is stuck between your teeth. Over-the-counter pain relief and a cold compress can help reduce discomfort until you arrive at our office.
2. Broken or Chipped Tooth: A cracked or broken tooth can result from an injury, biting into something hard, or even existing dental decay. Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. If a piece of the tooth has broken off, try to save it and bring it with you to your appointment. Swift treatment can often preserve the tooth and prevent further damage.
3. Knocked-Out Tooth: If a tooth has been completely knocked out, it’s important to act quickly. Locate the tooth, hold it by the crown (avoid touching the root), and rinse it with water. If possible, place the tooth back in its socket and gently bite down. If reinserting the tooth isn’t possible, place it in a container of milk or saliva and bring it to our office. Teeth that are re-implanted within an hour have the best chance of survival.
4. Abscess or Gum Infection: An abscess is a serious infection that can form in the gums or around a tooth. Left untreated, an abscess can spread and lead to further complications. Signs of an abscess include swelling, pain, and the appearance of a pus-filled pocket. Rinse your mouth with warm saltwater and use a cold compress to reduce swelling.
