Common Dental Emergencies We Treat

Dental emergencies come in many forms, from toothaches to trauma-related injuries. Below are some of the most common dental emergencies we encounter and how we recommend handling them until you can get to ourΒ office.

Common dental emergencies include:

  1. Toothache: A sudden or persistent toothache is often a sign of infection or decay. In most cases, a toothache won’t go away on its own and requires professional attention. If you’re experiencing a toothache, rinse your mouth with warm water and gently floss to ensure no debris is stuck between your teeth. Over-the-counter pain relief and a cold compress can help reduce discomfort until you arrive at our office.
  2. Broken or Chipped Tooth: A cracked or broken tooth can result from an injury, biting into something hard, or even existing dental decay. Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. If a piece of the tooth has broken off, try to save it and bring it with you to your appointment. Swift treatment can often preserve the tooth and prevent further damage.
  3. Knocked-Out Tooth: If a tooth has been completely knocked out, it’s important to act quickly. Locate the tooth, hold it by the crown (avoid touching the root), and rinse it with water. If possible, place the tooth back in its socket and gently bite down. If reinserting the tooth isn’t possible, place it in a container of milk or saliva and bring it to our office. Teeth that are re-implanted within an hour have the best chance of survival.
  4. Abscess or Gum Infection: An abscess is a serious infection that can form in the gums or around a tooth. Left untreated, an abscess can spread and lead to further complications. Signs of an abscess include swelling, pain, and the appearance of a pus-filled pocket. Rinse your mouth with warm saltwater and use a cold compress to reduce swelling. Contact our office immediately for treatment, as infections of this nature require prompt care to prevent the spread of bacteria.

Why Timely Action is Essential

In dental emergencies, time is of the essence. Prompt treatment can prevent infections, protect damaged teeth, and relieve pain. Here are some of the key reasons to seek immediate dentalΒ care:

  • Prevent Further Damage:Β Waiting too long to treat a dental emergency can result in additional damage to teeth and gums.
  • Alleviate Pain:Β Many dental emergencies come with significant discomfort. Quick action can help relieve pain and restore comfort.
  • Reduce the Risk of Infection:Β Untreated dental issues, especially those involving broken teeth or abscesses, can lead to infections that spread and cause more severe health concerns.
  • Improve Treatment Outcomes:Β The sooner a dental emergency is addressed, the better the chances of saving the tooth and avoiding the need for more complex procedures later.

FAQS

Frequently Asked Questions About Emergency Dentistry

Emergency dental care would be required if a person experiences an intense toothache, a missing tooth, damaged tooth restoration, a dental abscess, or any injury that causes blood loss or swelling.

In such a scenario, one needs to hold the tooth by its crown, rinse it under running water without using soap, and put it back into the socket. Alternatively, one can preserve the tooth by keeping it in milk and rushing to a dentist immediately.

A bad toothache can indicate an infection, a cavity, or tooth damage, and thus calls for emergency care. Treatment will alleviate the patient's pain and ensure the issue does not worsen.

A swelling on the gums, jaw, or face suggests that there is an infection. Emergency treatment is crucial since, left untreated, oral infections can result in complications to overall health.

The cracked dental crown or filling may put your teeth at risk of decay and sensitivity issues. Therefore, it is recommended that you see your dentist as soon as possible.

I am VERY pleased with Dr. Kimi Patel and her staff. I will admit, I was not the friendliest on my 1st appointment after seeing my treatment plan as I had just had quite a few procedures done at another dentist. However, that had absolutely NOTHING to do with Dr. Kimi, and she was still very kind to me. I just went for a filling/crown today. This isn't my 1st crown, but it was my 1st with her, and the 1st time I feel everything went smoothly and I felt extremely cared for and listened to. She was so patient and explained everything along the way. She is very personable and thorough. I look forward to her caring for my teeth for years to come.

First, I was lucky enough to get a same day apptointment. Upon my arrival I waited less than 5 minutes before my tech came to get me . The whole staff was so friendly & welcoming. I love the fact of Dr Kimi ask what I needed or if I had any concerns before she did her examine to my mouth to see what I needed. She also explained in full detail the procedures for what I needed; prior to doing the procedures. The tech and Dr Kimi kept me laughing and they even help me pick a restaurant to go to after my dental work because it was my birthday. Dr Kimi did such an amazing job on my teeth that I really wanted to cancel my dinner date. I am very very pleased with the outcome. Now, I am surely looking forward to getting aligners from their office. ~OUTSTANDING CUSTOMER SERVICE~ 5πŸ’«πŸ’«πŸ’«πŸ’«πŸ’«
